Founder’s Day: The Refugee Gardens Initiative
Speaker: Phimmasone Kym Owens, MSW Candidate in the Global Activities Scholars Program at the University of Michigan and founder of the Refugee Gardens Initiative
Description:
As a refugee in the early 1980s, Phimmasone Kym Owens couldn’t find foods that she knew from her native Laos. As a UofM LSA student, she helped to ease other’s transitions to the U.S. by founding a refugee garden on the UofM campus. Phimmasone will share how her personal journey led to the creation of the Refugee Gardens Initiative, which empowers refugees through food, support and storytelling.

Non-AAF&G members are welcome to attend the program for a $5 admission fee. All funds support Ann Arbor Farm & Garden’s annual garden-related grant and scholarship awards. Doors open at 12:30 pm. Please register by midnight, January 1st.
